Casino Games Beginner Guide
Learn the rules and basic strategies for the most popular casino games in Korea: Baccarat, Blackjack, Roulette, and Slots. Includes house edge comparison and tips for first-time players.
Before You Play: Essential Basics
Korean casinos offer a wide range of table games and electronic gaming machines. The most popular game by far is Baccarat, which accounts for over 60% of all gaming revenue in Korean casinos. This guide covers the essential rules and strategies for the four most common games you will encounter.
Important note: All Korean casinos offer free game tutorials for beginners. Simply ask at the information desk when you arrive, and a staff member will teach you the rules in English, Japanese, or Chinese.
Baccarat - Korea's #1 Casino Game
Why Baccarat?
Baccarat dominates Korean casinos because it is simple to learn, fast-paced, and has one of the lowest house edges of any casino game. You do not need any skill or strategy to play — it is purely a game of chance.
Basic Rules
- Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker (these are just names — you are not the "Player")
- You bet on which hand will have a total closest to 9
- Card values: Ace = 1, 2-9 = face value, 10/J/Q/K = 0
- If the total exceeds 9, drop the tens digit (e.g., 7+8 = 15, Baccarat value = 5)
- A two-card total of 8 or 9 is called a "Natural" and wins immediately
- Third-card drawing rules are automatic — the dealer handles everything
Betting Options
| Bet | Payout | House Edge | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker Win | 0.95:1 (5% commission) | 1.06% | Best bet statistically |
| Player Win | 1:1 | 1.24% | Good alternative |
| Tie | 8:1 | 14.36% | Avoid — very high house edge |
Tips for Beginners
- Stick to Banker bets — they win slightly more often than Player bets
- Avoid Tie bets — the 8:1 payout looks attractive but the 14.36% house edge makes it a poor wager
- Do not try to track patterns. Each hand is independent. Scoreboards are for entertainment only.
- Set a loss limit and stick to it. Baccarat moves fast, so manage your bankroll carefully.
Blackjack - Beat the Dealer
Basic Rules
- Goal: Get a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer without going over (busting)
- Card values: Number cards = face value, J/Q/K = 10, Ace = 1 or 11
- You and the dealer each receive two cards. One of the dealer's cards is face up.
- You choose to Hit (take another card), Stand (keep your hand), Double Down (double your bet and take one more card), or Split (if you have a pair)
- Blackjack = Ace + 10-value card = automatic win (pays 3:2)
Basic Strategy Summary
- Always hit on 8 or below
- Always stand on 17 or above
- Double down on 11 against dealer 2-10
- Double down on 10 against dealer 2-9
- Split Aces and 8s always
- Never split 10s or 5s
- If the dealer shows 2-6, they are likely to bust — stand on 12-16
- If the dealer shows 7-Ace, hit on 12-16
House Edge
With perfect basic strategy, Blackjack has a house edge of only 0.5-1%, making it one of the best games for players. Without strategy, the house edge can climb to 2-5%.
Roulette - The Wheel of Fortune
Basic Rules
- A ball is spun around a wheel with numbered pockets (0-36)
- You bet on where the ball will land
- Place your chips on the table layout before the dealer calls "No more bets"
Betting Options
| Bet Type | What It Covers | Payout | House Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red/Black | 18 numbers | 1:1 | 2.70% |
| Odd/Even | 18 numbers | 1:1 | 2.70% |
| 1-18/19-36 | 18 numbers | 1:1 | 2.70% |
| Dozen (1-12, 13-24, 25-36) | 12 numbers | 2:1 | 2.70% |
| Column | 12 numbers | 2:1 | 2.70% |
| Six Line | 6 numbers | 5:1 | 2.70% |
| Corner | 4 numbers | 8:1 | 2.70% |
| Street | 3 numbers | 11:1 | 2.70% |
| Split | 2 numbers | 17:1 | 2.70% |
| Straight Up | 1 number | 35:1 | 2.70% |
Note: Most Korean casinos use European Roulette (single zero), which has a lower house edge (2.70%) compared to American Roulette (double zero, 5.26%). Always choose the European wheel if available.
Tips for Beginners
- Start with even-money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even) to get comfortable
- The house edge is the same regardless of which bet you place on European Roulette
- Avoid "guaranteed winning systems" — no strategy can overcome the house edge in the long run
- Roulette is best enjoyed as a social, relaxed game rather than a serious money-making endeavor
Slot Machines - Easy & Fun
How Slots Work
Modern slot machines use a Random Number Generator (RNG) to determine outcomes. Each spin is completely independent — previous results have no effect on future spins.
Types of Slot Machines in Korean Casinos
- Classic Slots: 3 reels, simple gameplay, lower minimum bets
- Video Slots: 5+ reels, multiple paylines, bonus features, and animated graphics
- Progressive Jackpot Slots: Connected machines with a growing jackpot that can reach millions of KRW
- Electronic Table Games: Digital versions of Baccarat and Roulette with lower minimums than live tables
Tips for Slot Players
- Check the RTP (Return to Player) percentage. Higher RTP means better long-term returns. Look for machines with 95%+ RTP.
- Set a budget per session and use the machine's budget/limit feature if available
- Play maximum paylines (not necessarily maximum bet per line) to ensure you do not miss winning combinations
- Progressive jackpot machines often require maximum bet to qualify for the jackpot — factor this into your budget
House Edge Comparison: Which Game is Best?
